Cotton occupies a place of pride among different commercial crops in India. It also plays vital role in earning foreign exchange. However, the current cotton yield in India is still the lowest in the world due to lack of irrigation facilities and limited high quality seeds. Low yield results in lower production, which directly affects the exports of cotton. This trend needs to be changed by improving the performance in terms of per hectare yield, which will enhance our exports. During 1999, Indian con on export was 20 thousand tonnes. The projection for the years 2005 and 2010 were made at 104 and 131 thousand tonnes respectively.
