Abstract

The study was done in selenium toxic areas of district Nawanshahr and Hoshiarpur on selenotic anestrus buffaloes. Epidemiological data was collected regarding parity, duration of anestrus, feeding practices and severity of clinical signs. On the day of rectal examination, blood and hair samples were collected for mineral status evaluation. Epidemiological study indicated the existence of anestrus in heifers and adult buffaloes alike in selenotic areas. Majority of animals were in low to medium plane of nutrition and had mild to moderate severity of lesions on extremities alongwith loss of body hair. Maximum toxic levels of selenium were found in village Rakkar, Barwa being the least affected. Low levels of Fe, Cu and Pi while high levels of Zn and Mn were recorded in selenotic anestrus buffaloes.
