Progesterone, triiodothyronine and thyroxine profile in normal and repeat breeding murrah buffalo (Bubalus bubalis)

Abstract

Two groups each constituting six normal (N) and six repeat breeding (RB) Murrah buffalo cows were taken for the present study. Investigations were made to compare the hormonal profile viz. plasma progesterone (P4), triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) during different phases of the estrous cycle in normal cycling and RB Murrah buffalo cows. Plasma P4 and T3 concentrations were found to be significantly lower (p<0.05) in repeat breeding as compared to normal cycling buffalo cows during all the four phases of the estrous cycle. However plasma T4 concentrations were lower (p<0.05) in repeat breeding buffalo cows only during metestrus and diestrus phases of the cycle. The thyroidal activity based on T3 concentrations was higher during estrus phase was more as compared to other phases of the estrous cycle in both the normal and RB buffalo cows.
