Abstract

Simulated transportation studies were carried out to study the individual effect of film wrapping and packaging box or their combination on the mechanical damage and rate of ripening in mango fruits. The mangoes wrapped in three polymeric films viz LD-80, LD-60 and D-955 and were packed in three packaging boxes viz wooden box, CFB box and plastic crates. These were transported for a period of upto 72 hrs. It was found that shifting from traditional wooden boxes to CFB/plastic crates would entail a transportation loss reduction by 37–40 per cent. Simply film wrapping would result in loss reduction by about 60 per cent in any packaging box over control fruits. A combination of low-density polyethylene film (80 gauge) and plastic crate resulted in lower rate of ripening.
