Abstract

Random amplification of polymorphic DNA assay was conducted to assess the inbreeding in buffaloes. A total number of 40 bands were amplified which ranged from 300 to 1152bp. The average number of amplified bands per primer were 7.6 ±1.66 in the inbred groups. The average band frequency increased with the increase in the degree of inbreeding of the four inbred groups. Linear regression analysis of band frequency on inbreeding yielded a significant correlation coefficient of 0.993. On phylogenetic analysis, animals with same inbreeding coefficient were found to have higher similarity coefficient and formed a distinct cluster. This study supported the view that inbreeding coefficient in a population could be assessed by RAPD markers.
