Depleting water resources due to over-exploitation of groundwater in Punjab threatens the maintenance of agricultural productivity. It calls for devising and applying management interventions so as to sustain and enhance crop yields per unit of water input or consumed. Groundwater use can be reduced by manipulating evapotranspiration (ET) and percolation components of field water balance. This paper discusses practices like partly diversifying from rice-wheat to low ET crops and water-saving technologies.
