Relationship between nutrient intake and blood lotd profile of Pre-and Post-menopausal women

Abstract

One hundred twenty women of 45–55 years of age, belonging to middle income group in Ludhiana city were selected, out of which 60 were postmenopausal and 60 were premenopausal. Dietary survey was conducted by using 24-hr recall method and revealed that premenopausal women had significantly (P< 0.05) high intake of cereals, pulses, fats and sugar while intake of GLV, fruits, roots and tubers and milk were lower as compared to postmenopausal women. The postmenopausal women had significantly (P< 0.05) higher intake of protein, calcium, iron, β-carotene, thiamine, fibre, unsaturated fat and n-6 fatty acid while premenopausal women had higher intake of energy, saturated fat, riboflavin and ascorbic acid. Frequency of consumption of GLV, sweets, soybean and milk was higher in postmenopausal whereas consumption of fried foods and snacks was higher in premenopausal women. Postmenopausal had high values of blood pressure both systolic and diastolic, Hb and PCV as compared to premenopausal women. Hb was positively correlated with intake of energy and iron in both the groups. Energy, protein, fat and CHO were positively whereas fibre and riboflavin was negatively correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure in both the groups. Data revealed that there was no significant difference in TC, TG, VLDL-C, TC: HDL-C and LDL-C: HDL-C in both the groups and levels were within normal range. However, LDL-C was higher in premenopausal and HDL-C level was higher in postmenopausal women. TC and TG were positively correlated with energy and fat intake whereas negatively with fibre in both the groups.
