Musculoskeletal and vision related problems faced by female computer users: need for intervention

Present study was planned to evaluate design of computer tables in terms of musculoskeletal and vision related problems faced by female users. Hundred young female users were interviewed to know about the suitability of dimensions of computer table and problems experienced by them while working on computers. Results revealed that suitability score was high as regards the dimensions of computer tables. However, still majority of the respondents felt persistent pain in their neck and wrist and tingling in almost all parts of body except in their ankle and feet. They also reported about feeling of numbness in their lower leg and minimum of respondents reported about it for their lower back. Main visual problem felt was blurred vision. It was also revealed through generated data that these problems decreased when same amount of work was performed on modified table. Computer table was later modified according to relevant anthropometric data of the 100 selected females in the age range of 21–30 yrs and recommended for target group. Therefore, to encounter health hazards and to increase the productivity of the computer users, computer tables should be ergonomically designed.
