Response of berseem (Trifolium alexandrium) to boron application in alluvium derived soil

Abstract

Field experiment was conducted to study effect of boron applied through granubor (Na2 B4 O7. 5H2O; 15% B) on berseem (var BL- 5) on boron deficient soil. The treatment consisted of six levels of B (0, 0.5 0.75, 1.0 and 1.5 and 2.0 kg ha−1) which were tested in a randomized block design with three replications. Berseem fodder yield increased significantly in the first and second cuttings with soil application of 0.75 kg B ha−1, however, significant increase in yield was obtained in the third cutting with the application of 1.0 kg B ha−1. The mean B concentration increased with increasing rate of its application but decreased with aging However, significant increase in B content was obtained with application rate of 0.75 kg B ha−1 in the first and second cuttings and with 1.0 kg B ha−1 in the third cutting. Uptake of boron increased with increasing level of B and was highest in the third cutting Zinc content in plant showed synergistic relationship while Fe, Mn and Cu were not influenced by increasing rates of applied boron.
