Desertion of women by NRI husbands in Doaba region of Punjab: Motives thereof

The present study was undertaken to find out the motives of increased trend of NRI marriages in Punjab. The study was undertaken in four districts of Doaba region of Punjab on the sample of 60 women deserted by their NRI husbands. Probability Proportional to Size and Snow Ball techniques were used for sample selection. A self-structured interview schedule was used on the selected sample to determine the motives of the respondents to get married to the NRIs. The results revealed that Punjabi women married to NRI husbands as they perceive them being easier routes for immigration (33.33%) and lavish lifestyle (71.67%). In 75.00 per cent of the cases, they married to NRI boys for parental happiness. On the other hand, NRI boys married Punjabi girls mainly for the sake of dowry (70.00%) followed by parental happiness in 53.33 per cent of the cases.
