Impact of emotional autonomy on psycho-social adjustment of adolescents

The present study is an attempt to see the impact of emotional autonomy on psycho-social adjustment of male and female adolescents. A sample of 200 adolescents comprising of 100 boys and 100 girls in the age range of 1618 years was drawn from government schools of Ludhiana city in Punjab State. Emotional Autonomy Scale by Steinberg and Silverberg and Deva's Social Adjustment Inventory were used to study the emotional autonomy and social adjustment of adolescents, respectively. Findings of the study suggested that emotional autonomy was positively correlated with psychosocial adjustment of adolescents. Increase in emotional autonomy was associated with simultaneous increase in adjustment of both boys and girls. The cognitive domain of emotional autonomy contributed positively and significantly towards psycho-social adjustment of adolescents and was found to be a protective factor, whereas, the affective domain did not have any significant contribution to psycho-social adjustment.
