Narrow genetic base of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) has challenged the eforts of breeders to increase the productivity under changing environmental conditions. Inclusion of exotic and diverse cultivated genotypes ofers an opportunity to widen the genetic base of cultivated lentil. In this study, 135 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) developed from L9–12 (local lentil cultivar) × FLIP 2004-7L (advanced breeding line from ICARDA) cross were assessed to determine the extent of genetic variation for diferent yield and related traits. Analysis of variance revealed signifcant diferences among the RILs for yield and its related traits. Based on the mean performance, RILs 14, 17, 28, 33 and 71 were found to be signifcantly superior lines in comparison to parent L9–12 for all studied traits under both irrigated as well as rainfed conditions. As these lines exhibited minimum yield reduction under water stress, it is suggested to utilize these lines for the future drought tolerant lentil breeding programme.
