An economic analysis of berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) fodder cultivation in Punjab

Berseem fodder is highly nutritious and is the major fodder crop in rabi season. The present study was conducted to evaluate the economics of berseem fodder cultivation in Punjab during 2018–19. The data were collected from 80 fodder growers of Ludhiana and Gurdaspur district representing different farm size categories. Average size of operational holding was 9.79 acres. About 85% farmers were having their own tractor and 94 per cent farmers had electric motor as the source of irrigation. The area under berseem crop covered about 96% area of total rabi fodders. The share of labour costs was maximum (64%) in the total operational costs (Rs.16033). Returns over variable costs were observed to be Rs. 57003 per acre. These were 1.71 times higher than that of wheat crop (Rs. 33290/acre). To reduce the demand and supply gap of fodder, there is need to increase the area under berseem crop. In this regard, farmers should be motivated by making them aware about its profitability.
