Effect of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria on antioxidant enzymes and bulb quality in onion (Allium cepa)

Abstract

Onion seeds (PRO-6 and ADR) were treated with PGPR 3 (Pseudomonas flouroscens) and PGPR 7 (Bacillus cereus) and sown in the field along with control. Shoot length in PRO-6 and ADR, the number of leaves in PRO-6 and ADR as well as the yield per plot in PRO-6 and ADR were observed maximum in PGPR 7. The antioxidant enzymes; peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase showed maximum activity in PGPR 7 in roots, leaves and bulbs during different intervals of time (45, 90, 135 DAS and at maturity) in PRO-6 and ADR. The total phenol, anthocyanins, quercetin, pyruvic acid and lachrymatory factor were observed to be maximum in PGPR 7 in both PRO-6 and ADR seeds of onion. It was further concluded that the treatment given with Bacillus cereus (PGPR 7) resulted in higher activities of antioxidant enzymes and other plant growth parameters of onion seeds (PRO-6 and ADR).
