Biochemical characterization of Punjab celery 1 (Apium graveolens L.) Leaves and stalks

Abstract

The present study entailed evaluation of temporal variation in biochemical composition of of leaf and stalk tissues in recently commercialized celery variety “Punjab Celery 1” during its vegetative growth. Tissues were harvested at 45, 60, 75, 90 and 105 days after transplantation. Carbohydrate, protein, fiber, ash, minerals, antioxidant and chlorophyll content were significantly affected by the tissue examined. Carbohydrates, protein, tocopherol, total phenols, carotenoid and chlorophyll contents were highest in leaves. Stalks had high values of fiber, ash and tannin content. Vitamin C was at par in leaves and stalks. Celery antioxidant system exhibited highly significant relationships between ascorbic acid, tocopherols, total phenols, carotenoids and tannins. A significant positive correlation was observed between all analyzed components in leaves and stalks except moisture. Conclusively, Punjab celery 1 greens are endowed with good biochemical composition and may be included in our daily diets as a nutritional delicacy.
