Genetic Variability, Heritability and Genetic Advance for Yield and Yield Components in TEF Recombinant Inbred Lines Across Diverse Environments

Abstract

This study investigated the genetic variability and heritability of key agronomic traits in a diverse collection of Tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter] genotypes across two contrasting environments in Ethiopia. A simple lattice design was employed to evaluate 36 genotypes, including 33 recombinant inbred lines. Data were collected on traits such as grain yield, harvest index, effective tillers, and days to maturity. Results showed significant genetic variation among genotypes for most traits. Heritability estimates ranged from moderate to high, with traits like harvest index and effective tillers exhibiting high heritability. The study highlights the potential for genetic improvement in tef through breeding programs focused on traits with high heritability, such as harvest index and effective tillers. The findings emphasize the need for multi-location trials and the incorporation of modern breeding techniques to maximize genetic gains and develop improved tef varieties with enhanced yield and adaptability.
