Abstract

Objectives of the study were to ascertain the frequency of cesarean sections (CSs) and to study various indications of CSs.

The study was conducted in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department of the Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali Government Medical Sciences and Research Institute, Srinagar, Garhwal, from 1st January 2011 to 30th April 2011. The present study included all pregnant ladies booked for antenatal checkups, who went for caesarian section (CS) or unbooked pregnant females coming directly in emergency and undergoing CS.

Data was analysed by SPSS ver-sion-12 and graph pad.

A total of 292 CSs were performed in 4 months which were 28.7% of the total deliveries (1014). Among 292 patients, 35.3% were booked cases while 64.7% were un-booked. The CS rate was higher in females with higher education as compare to females with primary school education. Similarly CS rate was 27.4% in women coming from upper middle socio-economic status. The most common indication for cesarean section was fetal distress (32.8%) followed by previous cesarean section with scar tenderness (24.3%).

Majority of pregnant females who went for cesarean section were unbooked cases, women from higher socio-economic status, and higher education level were having higher rate of caesarian sections; the most common indication being fetal distress.
