Abstract

The association between type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity is very close. Obesity is common in women aged between 45–49 years. Prevalence of pre-diabetes also seems to be higher in women than men in the Indian population.

The present work was planned to study the pre-diabetic status in pre-obese and obese in premenopausal women with the help of estimation of fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels.

To study FBG levels of the normal weight, obese and pre-obese premenopausal women to assess the pre-diabetic status.

FBG levels and body mass index (BMI) were estimated in 194 asymptomatic premenopausal women with no family history of type 2 DM. The subjects were divided into control (I), pre-obese (IIa) and obese group (IIb). The results were analysed statistically using analysis of variance.

Mean FBG levels in pre-obese and obese group were higher than control group. There was a significant difference between BMI and FBG levels in premenopausal women.

In a nutshell, obesity without menopause also acts as an important predictor for type 2 DM. Thus, in premenopausal women lifestyle modifications may prove as an important means for prevention of obesity and type 2 DM.
