Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) is a psychoneuroendocrine disorder of unknown etiology, for which a well defined pharmacotherapy is still at large.
To compare the effects of monotherapy and combination therapy of mefenamic acid and sulbutiamine in PMS.
A study was conducted in 60 females suffering from premenstrual symptoms (PMS). Effects of mefenamic acid (NSAIDs) and sulbutiamine (a lipophilic thiamine derivative) alone and in combination were noted on symptoms of PMS.
Percentage improvement in symptom scores was 39.33%, 41.01% and 66.87% with mefenamic acid, sulbutiamine and combination therapy respectively. On comparison, highly significant improvement was seen with combination therapy, compared to both mono-therapies.
Combination therapy with mefenamic acid and sulbutiamine can be a better therapeutic option in the treatment of PMS than each drug alone.
