To compare three phenotypic tests for detection of extended spectrum β lactamases producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (ESBL-KP) isolated from Hospitalised patients
One hundred Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from hospitalized patients were screened for ESBL production. All were confirmed for ESBL production by Potentiated Disc Diffusion Test (PDDT), Double Disc Synergy Test (DDST) and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) by agar dilution technique.
MIC by agar dilution is considered as gold standard but is cumbersome. PDDT has sensitivity of 98.67%, specificity of 88%. DDST has sensitivity of 96%, specificity of 88%.
PDDT is more sensitive and less technically cumbersome test that can be adopted in the laboratory for detection of ESBL producing gram negative organisms.
