The medical teachers perform the roles of a teacher, manager, administrator, researcher and a doctor and all these actions are governed by and require a code of ethics. The ethical standards for medical teachers with regard to teaching and interactions with students are being ignored and need immediate attention.
A study was conducted in which responses of 600 students and 300 teachers towards common ethical violations and possible remedies were obtained.
The results indicate that a policy regarding academic honesty should be prepared and publicized (positive response was obtained from 95% teachers and 75% students). Regular feedback should be taken from students on teachers’ behaviour and their way of teaching (positive response was obtained from 33% teachers and 99% students). Management/administrators should behave ethically to faculties (positive response was obtained from 97% teachers and 95% students).
The student and teacher responses indicate that there is need for introspection and surrender to scrutiny because the interest of the society is paramount when compared to the interest of individuals.
