In developed countries, education of medical students in histology and pathology using microscopes and glass slides are fast becoming obsolete. Virtual microscopy (VM) is a digital procedure which is adopted globally. It provides a realistic alternative to the examination of glass slides using light microscope. This article discusses the merits and demerits of implementation of VM in medical education and updates its upcoming role in various other fields. It is high time that health professionals and medical teachers in India should adopt these technologies to make the learning both meaningful and interesting.
