How can we Explore the Factors Affecting Research Conduct?

On account of the acquaintance enthusiastic of clinical practice, the scientific researches have been realised to benefit. Nevertheless, there were many factors affecting research conduct, but fewer tools to measure in quantity manners. The objective of this study was to develop a self-rating questionnaire that can explore factors affecting research conduct in medical institutes.

A questionnaire was developed that comprised of demographic data and evaluation of one best choice answer for knowledge and four domains related to research (i.e. attitudes, motivations, resources and skills) in five-point Likert's scale fashion. The questionnaire was composed of 12 questions for the demographics, 7 for knowledge, 8 for attitude, 9 for motivation, 9 for resource, 10 for skill and 3 for research conductor's opinion, including the suggestion for the research encouragement. The draft was revised by a group of methodologists and was preliminary tested. The questionnaires were sent to 217 medical personnel in two hospital sites. The completed forms were analysed and demonstrated in Cronbach's alpha value. A statistic is considered excellent if the values are in the range of 0.7—0.9.

A total of 160 medical personnel (73.7%) returned the fulfilled survey. The majority were registered nurses who completed research courses in bachelor degree, but 84.1% had never done any research before. The Cronbach's alpha values for knowledge, attitude, motivation, resource and skill were 0.73, 0.71, 0.78, 0.86 and 0.82, respectively.

A high internal consistency questionnaire has been developed to evaluate the research capability. This instrument is expected to identify the research barrier to overcome and be part of the developmental strategies.
