Because of the increasing evidence that proper selenium (Se) nutrition is important for human health, an attempt was made to determine the concentration of Se and acceptable daily intake (ADI) in serum of 26 healthy individuals of our population in Pakistan and to compare with other countries of the world.
This study was carried out at National Physical Standard Laboratory PCSIR Islamabad and compiled in the Department of Biochemistry, Bannu Medical College, Bannu, from 2009 to 2010.
In this cross-sectional descriptive analytical study, serum Se concentration of 26 healthy individuals was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with hydride generation system, whereas ADI was calculated by using the formula narrated by Navarro et al.
The mean and standard deviation of serum Se concentration observed in male and female was 214.37±164.03 μg/l and 199.0±103.97 μg/l, whereas mean ADI was 134.51±109.35 μg in males and 132.67±69.31 μg in females.
The obtained results indicate that the normal Pakistani diet has an adequate content of Se for both genders.
