Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the circulatory responses to isometric exercise in hypertensive individuals with healthy controls in South West Punjab.

This study was carried out to examine the pressor response to isometric exercise in hypertensives, and to compare it with the response in healthy individuals.

The isometric hand-grip test was employed for this study.

We found that hypertensives have a higher vascular reactivity to isometric hand-grip test and most of the commonly used anti-hypertensive agents are unable to block this rise.

We conclude that hypertensives should avoid strenuous isometric exercises as the steep rise in blood pressure is deleterious to myocardium and cerebral arterioles, which may lead to acute left ventricular failure or cerebrovascular accidents.
