Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlated integrated teaching programme conducted among the medical students.
Methods: Integrated teaching programme on hypertension was conducted among the final year medical students. The faculties from the Departments of Community Medicine, Cardiology, Nephrology, Dietetics and Nutrition and Physical Education participated in the programme. The topics covered were epidemiology, aetio-pathogenesis, clinical features and management, prevention and control measures, including role of diet and physical activity in hypertension control. A total of 101 students participated in the study. Set induction was done using a role play performed by the students. Pre-test and post-test evaluations were conducted using a questionnaire consisting of 20 multiple choice questions. Analysis of pre-test and post-test results was done for 100 students as one questionnaire was not filled properly, whereas feedback forms were completed at the end of the session by only 93 students and were accordingly analysed.
Results: The mean marks scored by the students (SD) in the pre-test and post-test evaluations were 9.16 (2.092) and 15.19 (2.842), respectively. In the pre-test, only 25% of the students scored >50% marks, whereas in post-test, the percentage rose to 94%. There was a statistically significant increase in the percentage of students who correctly answered various questions under different topics in the pre-test and post-test evaluations. About 48% of the students rated the integrated teaching programme overall as ‘very good'and 31% as ‘excellent’.
Conclusion: This study showed that the correlated integrated teaching is an effective learning method and should be practiced among the medical students.
