Perception and Preference of Medical Students about New Learning Methods

In these days, traditional teaching style in medical colleges has been shifted to more technology oriented model of education. The aim of the study was to assess the students’ preference and their view against various learning methods like lecture using chalkboard (CB), Power Point presentation (PPT), overhead projector (OHP) or using animation-based learning (ABL).

A total of 92 students were included in the study. During the teaching schedule, the lectures were given using different teaching methods like CB, PPT, OHP and ABL. Questionnaires were given to see the perception and preference of medical students about the above-listed teaching aids towards different modalities like visualising concept, sustaining interest, remembering facts, understanding better and applying knowledge. They were asked to tick each items using a five-point Likert-type scale as follows: 1=strongly agree, 2=agree, 3=no opinion, 4=disagree and 5=strongly disagree. They were asked to comment on their beliefs and attitudes towards the use of above-listed teaching aids.

The results were analysed using chi-square test. ABL and PPT were more effective than others as for visualising concept. ABL and CB learning (CBL) were more effective than others as for sustaining interest. CBL and ABL were more effective than others as for understanding better. CBL and ABL were more effective than others as for remembering facts. CBL and ABL were more effective than others as for applying knowledge.

Learning preferences of medical students indicate ABL as a promising teaching methodology. According to the students, CB combined with aids like ABL or PPT will be more beneficial.
