Menstrual cycles are associated with changes in various body systems. Some women experience episodes of vomiting, nausea and many other disorders. In the recent years, another noticeable factor associated with menstruation is thinning hair and hair loss.
Keeping this parameter in mind, a study was conducted in the Islamic International Medical College, which involved 100 female students.
The sample included first and second year medical students. Their ages were 16–18 years. Only females with regular cycles were included in the study, i.e. 5/28 and 5/30 cycles. The associated changes in hair were also noticed. They were asked to perform a pull test. Data were analysed using SPSS 17. Percentages were calculated for different parameters.
The average age of 60% of the students involved in the study was 16–17 years. A total of 40% were around the age of 18 years. In total, 55% of the students had 5-day cycles and the duration of the cycle was 5/28 in 45% of the students. Pull test was negative in 76% of the students. The hairs were rough in 85% of the students. In all, 54% had splits in their hair. A total of 10% of the students felt that hairs were discoloured. In total, 60% of the students noticed thinning of hair.
The results of this study showed thatthere is a consistent relationship between hair changes and the female reproductive cycle.
