To analyse and compare the results of temporal corneal manual small-incision cataract surgery with temporal phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
Patients undergoing surgery for senile cataract were randomised to undergo either temporal corneal manual small-incision cataract surgery(SICS)or temporal phacoemulsification cataract surgery. The patients were seen after 1 day, 7 days and 6 weeks. The main objective was to find out the uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) at week 6. The other aims were the total post-operative astigmatism (refraction) induced at the end of 6 weeks in two groups, intra- and post-operative complications, the visual acuity on day 1, and the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at week 6.
Forty-five patients were recruited into each group of the study. There was no difference in the incidence of intra-ocular complications but one case had a nucleus drop in the phacoemulsification group only. The post-operative UCVA was better in phacoemulsification group at all visits. The BCVA in both the groups was comparable in both the groups at the end of 6 weeks but surgically induced astigmatism was higher in the manual SICS group.
Both the surgeries have comparable results in terms of visual improvement but manual SICS causes more postoperative astigmatism. However, phacoemulsification has an edge of providing better UCVA but it may be associated with serious complication of nucleus drop.
