Abstract

Despite the efficacy of antidepressant medications in treatment of major depressive disorder, significant number of patients shows remission. Augmentation therapy is one of the best modalities used intreatment resistant depression. A lot of studies demonstrated comparison of lithium and thyroxine in treatment resistance depression but the data on Indian population is lacking. Hence this study was designed to comparethe effect of lithium and thyroxine as augmentation therapy in the patients with treatment resistance depression.

In this open, randomized, parallel group study 20 patients with TRD were enrolledafter giving written informed consent and were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 received thyroxine and Group2 received lithium along with conventional antidepressant therapy. The patients were assessed weekly for 4 weeks on Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A)

A total of 20 patients were recruited in the study and divided into 2 groups. Patients in both thegroups showed significant (p<0.05) improvement in HDRS and HAM-A scores as compared to baseline. There was no significant difference between the groups at any point of time during the therapy.

To conclude both the treatment modalities showed comparative improvement in cases of TRD.
