Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) to treatment are common; however information about their incidence, severity is scanty. The aim of the present study was to detect, assess and report suspected ADRs in antihypertensive agents in Medical OPD, SGRDIMSAR, Amritsar so as to treat and stop indiscriminate use of drugs in clinical practice.
A prospective study was undertaken from July 2011 to June 2014 in patients presenting with ADR in Medical OPD of SGRDIMSAR, Amritsar which is a tertiary care hospital in Punjab. A suitable statistical test was applied for analysis of data.
A total of 84 ADRs were detected, documented, assessed and reported during the study period. Assessment of severity of the suspected ADRs revealed that 2.3% of suspected ADRs were severe, 25% were moderate and rests were of mild intensity. Most of the ADRs were from Calcium Channel Blockers and its combination followed by beta blockers. The most common type of ADR was seen in nervous system followed by respiratory system.
Thus to conclude the study indicate that pharmacovigilance activity is significantly effective in increasing the reporting of ADRS.
