Macular edema occurs when fluid and protein deposits collect on or under the macula of eye and causes it to thicken and swell; causing severe vision loss and even blindness.
Patients with various diseases like diabetes mellitus, hypertension, BRVO, CRVO, Glaucoma, etc. who had macular edema were recruited in the study after they gave a written informed consent. A Performa was filled by the patients which included their signs and symptoms. The prevalence of macular edema in a particular disease was calculated.
The prevalence of macular edema in all the disease was compared. The results showed that prevalence of macular edema was highest in diabetes mellitus (38%), followed by diabetes mellitus and hypertension (24%) and CME (12%) with least prevalence in ARMD, Glaucoma, CSME and Frosted branch Angiitis.
Diabetes mellitus had highest prevalence of macular edema followed by diabetes mellitus and hypertension, and post cataract surgery cystoids macular edema.
