The aim of the study was to compare the maternal and foetal outcomes with elective induction of labour in comparison to spontaneous onset of labour and also to quantify the risk of caesarean section in the elective induction group.
This was a prospective case control study. The study group comprised of 150 electively induced women and the control group was 150 women going into spontaneous labour in Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital. The women in both groups were between 37 and 41 weeks of pregnancy and had no complications necessitating induction of labour.
The rates of caesarean section were significantly higher in nulliparous women but the same in multiparous women in the elective induction group in comparison to control group. The factors associated with higher risk of caesarean section were nulliparity, low bishop score, and birth weight >3.5 kg.
The elective caesarean section rates are higher in nulliparous women but are similar in multiparous women.
