Abstract

Evidence from many countries suggests an association of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and tuberculosis of major public health significance. This study was conducted to find out the prevalence and the trend of HIV infection among tuberculosis patients and to evaluate the clinical, mycobacteriological and radiological profile of tuberculosis among the HIV seropositive.

All the patients of tuberculosis, pulmonary or extra-pulmonary, who attended the outpatient/indoor department of Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Research from March 2006 to March 2011 were screened for HIV co-prevalence.

The HIV seropositivity rate amongst 308 tuberculosis patients was 10.39%. Disseminated tuberculosis and extrapulmonary tuberculosis was seen more common among the HIV positive with significantly low level of immunosuppression.

HIV is highly seroprevalent among the tuberculosis patients. The clinical and radiological patterns of tuberculosis reflect the level of immunosuppression.
