In physiology theoretical concepts are supported by practical training. Measuring BP manually is a highlydeveloped skill, requiring practical training. Simulators provide a risk-free standardized and controlled environment for practical examination and can be used for training for blood pressure measurements.
Objective of the study was to evaluate the educational benefits of using human patient simulator (HPS) SimMan 3G over traditional teaching methods.
Students were sub-divided in to control and study groups. The control group performed BP measurement on each other and the study group did the same BP measurement procedure on SimMan 3G. Both the groups were assessed objective structured clinical examination and marks were given accordingly. The marks were compared by Student's t-test.
The mean marks obtained by both the groups were nearly the same, with no significant difference.
Simulation techniques are as effective tools in medical education as conventional methods. They can be used specifically to learn about cases when patients are not available.
