The medicine course is one of the science courses with a longer duration of nearly five and half years. Currently, the approach of teaching in theory classes is mainly didactic method. The students feel it difficult to understand the complex subjects especially in the first year of the course.
The small group teaching strategy was adopted to teach the complex topics to the students and then assess their performance before and after undergoing the small group teaching process. A total of 30 students underwent the process for a period of 2 months.
The mean, standard deviation and standard error before the activity for the group were 29.13, 5.79 and 1.05, respectively. The similar parameters after the activity were 33.40, 4.79 and 0.87. There was a positive paired samples correlation of 0.79. The paired difference between the means was 4.26, standard deviation 3.49 and standard error of mean 0.63 with 95% confidence interval CI of 2.96–5.57. The t value was 6.69 at 29 degrees of freedom and was found to be significant (p< 0.05).
These kinds of innovative teaching methodologies should be tested and adopted for teaching at the medical college students.
