With increasing incidence of blood-borne infections like HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and others, it has become necessary to forbid practice of mouth pipetting.
Aims of the study was to look for some feasible options as an alternative to mouth pipetting and discuss their accuracy, advantages and disadvantages.
Four alternative methods are as follows: (1) Rubber teat small sized (available from used C-reactive protein (CRP) test kit), (2) 1-ml and 2ml syringes, (3) Standard length rubber tube and (4) long rubber tube (≥30 cm) were tried.
Use of small rubber teat same as available in CRP test kit was the best option for pipetting blood into haemoglobin (Hb) pipette. For white blood cell count, use of Hb pipette and use of 1-ml syringe were found to be good options.
Alternative methods can also give desirable results.
