Abstract

The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and students perceptions regarding integrated modular curriculum of endocrine system.

The present study was conducted amongst the first-year MBBS students to assess the efficacy of integrated module for endocrine system. A total of 228 students were exposed to different forms of teaching on same topic at consecutive days. Day one was given a didactic lecture on adrenal cortex for 60 min by the physiology faculty, and on day two, the same set of students were exposed to an integrated module on the same topic taken by anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, medicine and surgery. Maximum 20 min were allotted to one faculty. The evaluation was done immediately at the end of the sessions using a feedback questionnaire.

A percentage of 90 students had the opinion that modular teaching has improved their understanding, and it is more interesting, and they can understand the concepts better, and in clear way, 85% of the students felt that the information imparted by including the medicine department will help them in their clinical practice. A percentage of 74students thought that they can score better in exams when they are taught in the form of module, whereas 15% feel that they can score better even with the help of didactic lectures.

Presenting or teaching a topic in integrated modular way enhances the learning skills of the student, as well as their performance in the exams.
