Comparison of Diagnostic Yield of Digital Rectal Examination, Serum Prostate Specific Antigens, Transrectal Ultrasound with Histopathology of Prostate

Abstract

Prostate diseases like benign prostate hypertrophy, malignancy and prostatitis are common in fifth decade onwards in males. Digital rectal examination (DRE), prostate specific antigens (PSA), transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and guided biopsy are common modalities for its evaluation.

To compare the diagnostic yield of DRE, PSA, TRUS with histopathological findings of prostate.

120 cases with urinary symptoms of prostate disease were subjected to DRE, PSA, TRUS and biopsy, and then results were compared.

TRUS and guided biopsy are most sensitive and specific for detection of early malignancy in prostate.

The detection rate of prostate malignancy is increased when DRE, PSA, TRUS and guided biopsy are used in combination.
