Foundation Course-Gateway to the Making of an Indian Medical Graduate

Admission to MBBS course in India is based on entrance tests based on knowledge, but apart from possessing knowledge, there is need for the MBBS graduates to have certain type of attitude and aptitude so that he or she is able to perform the function of a doctor in the society. A 4-day foundation course was conducted for the fresh students admitted to MBBS course at Andaman Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences Port Blair, India.

Ninety-two students had joined the course; the course was planned, arranged and executed by the department of Medical Education Unit. Many topics were covered during the course.

The commonest reason for choosing medical profession mentioned was to serve the society and poor people; second common reason was childhood dream. A session was planned to teach and to experience empathy by students by arranging a visit to the hospital. 51% students expressed their gratitude to the faculty for arranging such a memorable visit. During valedictory function, white coat ceremony was conducted in the presence of parents. 100% appreciated the course in some way or the other and gave their affirmation that such courses should to be continued.

The aim of medical education is not only to produce efficient and competent doctors but also to produce doctors who are compassionate and empathetic. Students felt that such orientation courses are helpful in preparing them for the main course. This ‘Foundation Course ’was very enthusiastically accepted by the students and their parents.
