It is observed that dental students show less interest in medical subjects. So, innovations are needed to motivate students for active self-learning.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of intra-class interactive quiz as an active self-learning method.
As a pilot study, a quiz was announced to undergraduate dental students. All the students were divided into two teams. Each team was asked to study a part of the chosen topic in pathology and prepare questions. During the quiz, a team leader from each team asked questions to opponent team. Questions were contributed by all team members. The teachers acted as facilitators. Marks were given to each team for every correct answer. All 45 students filled a questionnaire to provide their feedback.
All the students (100%) enjoyed the session. Majority of the students (80–95%) were motivated and stimulated to active self-learning. This session was helpful in understanding of the covered topic. It made the subject more interesting and learning was better than conventional tutorial. The students (73%) felt that it would help them to perform better in their viva voce examinations. Majority (87%) said that more time should be devoted to such interactive sessions.
Intra-class interactive quiz sessions are effective in motivating students for active self-learning. This also improves their ability to work as a team.
