The traditional viva examination (TVE) as one of the assessment methods lack standardisation, objectivity, reliability and assess recall rather than depth of knowledge. Personal biases, inter assessor variability and other variations can be resolved by structuring the viva examination.
To introduce objective structured viva examination (OSVE) as a tool for student assessment in pathology by taking faculty and student's feedback to find its objectivity and reliability.
After ethics committee approval, this study was conducted in Department of Pathology on 73 students of second year MBBS. Haematology and clinical pathology viva were taken for the second year MBBS students in PMCH, Udaipur, by both structured and traditional pattern as part of formative assessment. The specific pattern of the structured and unstructured viva was formulated and the faculty and student's feedback response were taken on 5-point Likert scale to assess the acceptability and reliability of OSVE.
The post viva student's questionnaire response reveals that overall student satisfaction with OSVE is 75%.
