A trusted advisor is the meaning of the word mentor. Mentors are the backbone of the mentoring. A good mentor can make a lot of difference to the mentees. Availability, listening to the mentees, problem solving and guiding them is the qualities of a good mentor. But the present mentorship is not structured and the mentor is neither being assessed for the mentorship nor being trained for it.
To explore the knowledge and perceptions of the mentors with respect to undergraduate mentoring.
Across-sectional survey among mentors from five different institutes.
Mentors of various cadres from five different colleges were chosen for the study and they were asked to opine on six open-ended and fifteen close-ended questions for the knowledge and perceptions of mentorship, respectively.
A total of 90 mentors returned the questionnaires out of 320 questionnaires with a response rate of 28.12%. The duration of mentorship varied from 6 months to 19 years with a mean duration of 45 months.
Two-way participation is required for effective mentorship. Training is a must for all the mentors before taking up mentorship.
