Describing the steps of hernioplasty is a complex teaching process. Commercial inguinal canal models are available but the main limitation of their utility is the resource and cost. Studies with the use of low cost inguinal canal models exist, but are limited to Post-graduate teaching. In the present study an attempt was made to test the effectiveness of “Inhouse made inguinal canal model” for teaching hernioplasty surgery for final MBBS students.
Total 30 Final MBBS students were divided into two groups of 15 each (A: Control and B: Study group). Pre-test was conducted for all the 30 students to know their knowledge of hernioplasty surgery. Following it, Group A underwent teaching of hernioplasty surgery by conventional method whereas the Group B using Ih-ICM. Post-teaching assessment of all the students was done by MCQ and OSCE. Feedback of all the students was obtained regarding the teaching method. Descriptive statistical analysis of the collected data was done. To find the difference between Pre and Post-test, paired t test was used whereas between control and study group unpaired t test was used.
Pre-test showed the equal knowledge of hernioplasty in both the groups. Post-test showed significant improvement in the acquisition of the knowledge of hernioplasty surgery in Ih-ICM group. All the students found this method to be helpful.
Ih-ICM is effective in teaching hernioplasty surgery for Final MBBS students. It is safe, portable, cost effective and easily reproducible. Even though it needs further studies with large sample size.
