Abstract

To assess the understanding levels regarding foundation course in 1st year MBBS students at the entry level.

The student feedback was obtained from a self developed questionnaire with a five point likert scale. The questions were based on the topics that were covered in the foundation course. After taking informed consent, out of 150 students, 120 students (boys-80, girls-40,) participated in the study.

The highest percentage (48.3%) from the study was given for the questions on assessment methods and orientation programme to college campus & facilities. The option ‘much’ was given by 46.6% students for the question on self directed learning, 46.7% for concept of biomedical waste management and 42.8% on communication skills. 40.8% of the students responded “great deal” for the question on concept of medico-legal issue. The replies to other questions were less than 40%.

This study indicated that orientation programme to college campus & facilities and assessment methods are better understood by majority of the students in foundation course, followed by the topic on self directed learning and communication skills. This study suggests that the other topics of the foundation course need to be implemented in an interesting manner to get a better feedback from the students regarding the perception of foundation course.
