Effectiveness of Educational Intervention on Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Hand Hygiene Among Internees

Health care-associated infections (HCAIs) affect millions of patients worldwide. The magnitude and scope of the HCAI burden worldwide appears to be very important and greatly underestimated. The single most important precautionary measure to prevent HCAIs that is simple and proven effective to implement is hand hygiene.

A prospective interventional study was conducted in the department of Paediatrics, Mediciti Institute of Medical Sciences over a period of four months from October 2017 to January 2018. A total 52 interns participated in the study were assessed by questionnaire followed by a Hands-on training. Post training assessment of attitude was done using checklist.

A total 52 interns were enrolled in the study. Male to Female ratio was 0.48: 1(17/35). Only 17.3% (9 out of 52) had received formal training in hand hygiene. Post-test was conducted after training, with single intervention 98.1% were confident of performing hand hygiene and alcohol-based hand rubs were well tolerated.

Our study brings out the effectiveness of single educational intervention in improving the attitude significantly but this was not sufficient to improve their skills in hand hygiene
