An empirical study on “Growth and instability in silk production in J&K state” was carried out with an objective to emphasize the trends of number of mulberry trees, cocoon production, yield of cocoon per mulberry tree, raw silk production, seeds produced, number of seeds imported etc besides working out its instability in sericulture. The results indicate that though Jammu region of J and K state is gaining ground in terms of number of mulberry trees planted, cocoon production and yield of cocoon per mulberry tree than Kashmir region in first two periods but behaved differently in third period, which showed increase in number of mulberry trees and cocoon production in Kashmir valley. However, yield of cocoon per mulberry tree recorded to be higher in Jammu region (2.99 per cent) than Kashmir region (1.67 per cent). From overall period the growth trend of these variables tend to be higher in Jammu region as compared to Kashmir region. The negative significant growth has been found in cocoon production (−1.18 per cent) and yields of cocoon per mulberry tree (−7.13 per cent). Similarly, From overall; period, it had been found that production of seeds, import of seeds and production of raw silk though higher in Jammu region showed negative trend. The level of variability varies over the periods and is in the decreasing trend but the overall variability in sericulture had been worked to be 24.27 percent. The projected values are showing some sort of improvement in production of cocoons (12.49 000 qtls) and its yield (0.065 qtls).
