The study was conducted in two districts namely; Gurdaspur (Punjab) and Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir), which are representing the semi hilly tracks in north India with a view to examine the existing resource use in case of farm labour. Multistage random sampling technique was used to select the samples. The sample comprised 180 farmers. It was observed that the share of dairy in the total labour use on the farms decreased with an increase in farm size, where as the share of crops increased. It may be inferred from these results that dairy assumed a relatively more significance to supplement the incomes of small farms as compared to medium and large farms. There is a scope to increase the labour employment through increase in cropped area but the mechanical labour has significantly reduced the labour use. Also it has been observed that wage rate reduce the labour use.
