Twenty four F1 hybrids of okra were evaluated for extent of heterosis for yield and yield contributing traits. Analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences for all the characters suggesting presence of genetic variability. VRO-4, VRO-5, VRO-6, Varsha Uphar, Arka Anamika, Hisar Unnat, BS-14 and BS-12 were observed to be best performing parents for fruit yield, number of fruits/plant, plant height and earliness. Appreciable heterosis was found over better and mid parent for all the characters studies in desired direction. Top ranking F1 hybrids were VRO-4 x Arka Anamika, VRO-4 x BS-14, VRO-4 x Hisar Unnat, VR005 x BS-12 and VRO-5 x BS-14 were observed to be best performer for fruit yield as they recorded significant heterosis of 45.41 and 45.97; 37.35 and 40.03; 36.53 and 37.97; 34.06 and 36.96; and 31.33 and 36.07% over better and mid parent respectively. The maximum yield recorded by these hybrids has been attributed to increase in number of fruits/plant. The high yielding F1 hybrid VRO-4 x Arka Anamika, VRO-4 x BS-14, VRO-4 x Hisar Unnat, VR005 x BS-12 and VRO-5 x BS14 which recorded highest heterosis over better parent may be recommendedfor commercial cultivation. Their segregating generations are expected to yield outstanding segregants.
