Abstract

Water plays a very significant role in both livestock and agriculture farm. Water use enables plants to be grown and livestock to be raised, which is the primary component of our diet. There are many instances where we need to pump out water either for irrigation or for drinking purposes. It could be of importance if the pumping be performed in environment and health friendly manner. Therefore, an experiment was conducted during the year 2023-24 in the field lab of Department of Soil and Water Conservation Engineering, SVCEAT & RS, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya and at the residential site ‘C’ of Chhattisgarh Housing Board Colony, Pirda-2, Raipur (Chhattisgarh). The system is environment and health friendly and doesn’t require any external source of power as it is based on human muscle power only. It is recommended that it should be adopted to burn some calories, doing exercise in rotary pedal mode and making judicious use of the calories being burnt for some useful work. The aim of the study is to develop human powered water pumping system and its performance evaluation in terms of headdischarge for lifting and carrying water. Two women aged 28 and 32 years operated the water pumping system under suction head 3 m and delivery head 0.18 m and discharge of 54 lpm was found. Similarly, two children aged 11 and 12 years operated under suction and delivery head of 3 m and 0.18 m and discharge of 50 lpm was found. Based on the result obtained it is concluded that the water pumping system can be easily run by women and children.
